Data Science In Our Everyday Lives
Data science is something that is used very often in our everyday lives. It allows us to analyze trends in what consumers may buy. This, in turn, lets companies know which of their products is the most popular, allowing them to profit more.
Data science is also used in the music industry and entertainment industry. Upon researching an article discussing this, I’ve found out that streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music provide data about its users’ listening habits and where they are located. This allows for artists and record labels to know which songs to promote as singles and in what locations. It can also reveal which genres cater to different audiences the best. This is important because promoting songs that audiences resonate with more allow the songs to be more successful.
That is an explanation as to why you may find some songs that sound similar when you turn on the radio. That specific genre is what the general public likes the most, so that’s what the most profitable genre is.
Additionally, Spotify uses data science to create playlists for each user. Essentially, the program analyzes the music the user listens to, and then based on that, it recommends similar sounding songs to the user in a Discover Weekly playlist. This is very crucial as Spotify makes more profit by keeping its users engaged. Obviously, listening to songs that fit your music taste keeps you more engaged than if you were to listen to songs that you don’t like. These Discover Weekly playlists allow the user to remain engaged and use the application more
In the entertainment industry, Netflix uses a similar recommendation system to recommend different movies based on the users’ movie-watching habits. YouTube does something similar with its recommended page. It takes videos that the user has watched before and based on that, it recommends videos that are similar to it. YouTube’s use of data science isn’t just endemic to its recommended page, though. It also provides statistics on a YouTube video - such as its watch time and the timestamps that are most commonly visited - so the content creator knows which types of content resonate with the audience, allowing them to know which content makes them profit the most. Additionally, YouTube used data science to adopt an AI system that can detect content that violates its community guidelines or spreads misinformation. According to the article I’ve referenced, during the first few days of the COVID-19 pandemic, YouTube’s AI system took down 11 million videos that contained misinformation.
So ultimately, data science is something that gets used in our everyday life in virtually every aspect of it, including our music-listening and movie-watching habits. This is a big reason why there is such a huge growth in data science majors and careers today - there is so much demand for them because data science provides companies and people vital information that they can use to gain profit or success.
